A note about cheese… American or Cheddar cheese is most commonly used in cookery because it melts easily and smoothly. Sharp cheeses are often preferable so the flavor does not get lost.

INGREDIENTS NEEDED:
-2 cans condensed tomato soup
-1 ⅓ cups water
-1 bay leaf
-3 whole cloves
-1 teaspoon sugar
-2 cups flour
-5 teaspoons baking powder
-1 teaspoon salt
-2 tablespoons shortening
-½ cup grated cheese
-1 cup milk

DIRECTIONS TO FOLLOW:
Combine tomato soup, water, bay leaf, cloves and sugar in a saucepan; heat to boiling point.

Sift flour; measure; add baking powder and salt; sift again.

Cut in shortening, using two knives or a pastry blender; stir in cheese. Add milk gradually, stirring it in with a fork.

Drop the dough by tablespoonfuls into the boiling soup; cover and cook over low heat for 15 minutes; do not remove cover during cooking.

Serve dumplings covered with the sauce. Makes 6 servings.
